The painting by VanGogh called The Starry Night (1889) is arguably one of the most iconic paintings. Notice the spiral-like shapes (see previous post on spirals) which infer energy and movement. The painting is housed in The Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

VanGogh spent some time in the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, located in Saint-Remy-de-Province in Southern France. While he was allowed to paint during his stay, he stared by using his ideas to make drawings based on his observations of what he saw out his window,
VanGogh used several different painting techniques and the presence of both living and non-living things in tf yohe painting have been said to be “bringing nature to the unnaturalness of the building”
